Norwest Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery’s medical grade Cutera Xeo offers both Laser (Coolglide) and Intense Pulsed Light (Prowave) hair reduction. Both have advantages, depending on your individual needs and your Fitzpatrick Skin Type. Both systems cool the epidermis (top layer of the skin) to prevent unwanted hypopigmentation and promote patient comfort.
Both Laser and Intense Pulsed Light only eliminate hair follicles that are in the anagen (growing) phase. At any point in time, only 20% of hair follicles are in anagen, so multiple treatments are required, and these are best spaced about 4-6 weeks apart. Most patients have dramatic responses after only a few treatments, however up to 10 sessions may be required in the toughest areas. Pre-purchasing a complete treatment of 6 sessions is priced at the cost of only 5 sessions – so your last session is free!
A consultation is essential at least 48hrs prior to your first treatment. This allows a test patch to be performed and clinical photos taken to monitor your progress and results. The consultation and test patch is $50. This is deducted from the cost of your first treatment.
The night prior to your consultation, you should exfoliate, as a smoother surface allows deeper penetration of the light energy.
On the day before your treatment, it is recommended that you shave the area being treated.
Anaesthetic cream is rarely required. If the test patch during your initial consultation is very uncomfortable, please inform our laser therapist. EMLA cream can be applied (and covered with cling wrap) about an hour prior to your full treatments.
After your treatments it may take several days for the treated hairs to fall out. It is common to feel mildly sun burnt and the area may be a slightly red. It is important to avoid artificial tanning and unprotected sun exposure after and between sessions.

Prowave
Cutera’s Prowave Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) system combines speed, comfort and safety along with optimal results. Prowave produces light of wavelengths from 770nm (nanometers) through to 1100nm, allowing the safe treatment of hair follicle melanin in most skin types.
Coolglide
Cutera’s Coolglide is the first laser cleared for permanent hair reduction in all skin types, including darker skins such as Fitzpatrick Types V and VI. Coolglide is an Nd-YAG laser of 1062nm, allowing it to excel not only in hair reduction in difficult skin types, but has the diversity to treat vascular lesions as well.
This is a much stronger, more intense light form than IPL. Coolglide cools the skin before the laser penetrates into the skin, to reduce the risk of epidermal damage, such as postoperative crusting or pigment changes.
