Skin Cancer Reconstruction Recovery
Skin Cancer Reconstruction in Sydney – Recovery
What should you expect after a skin cancer reconstruction in Sydney?
Skin cancer reconstruction in Sydney is usually performed as a day surgery procedure, or under local anaesthetic at Norwest Plastic & Cosmetic Surgery. Most patients do not need to spend a night in hospital after having this procedure.
Side effects that may occur after skin cancer reconstruction in Sydney
In the first 24 hours, it is normal to expect the following symptoms:-
• Dry throat
• Nausea (possibly)
• Mild discomfort and stiffness
Pain control after skin cancer reconstruction
You will be discharged home with a prescription for pain relief and antibiotics. You will take these medications for a few days after your skin cancer reconstruction in Sydney. If you are prone to feeling sick after operations, you will also be given a prescription for something to help with that.
The local anaesthetic helps with pain control for the first evening, but has usually worn off by the following morning. This is usually the time when patients feel the most soreness. Regularly taking paracetamol and anti inflammatories for the first few days after the operation is important in minimising your discomfort and need for stronger pain killers after your skin cancer reconstruction in Sydney.
Caring for your wound after skin cancer reconstruction in Sydney
You will wake up with a light dressing on your operation area. It is normal to have a bit of ooze on this dressing in the first night. If your dressing soaks through, please contact Norwest Plastic & Cosmetic Surgery to have your dressing changed.
We ask all patients to attempt to keep their dressings dry for two to three days after their procedure. There is good evidence that by the third day after a procedure, the skin around a surgical site has healed sufficiently to prevent water from entering a wound. There has been recent evidence that there is no increase in infection rate in wounds that have been wet after 24 hours after a procedure – so it is not a disaster if you do get the wound a little wet.
Return to activity after your skin cancer reconstruction in Sydney
Most people can return to an office job within a day or two. Returning to exercise and other activities has many variables, and you should discuss these with Dr Gavin Sandercoe at any of your appointments. Allowing time for your body to heal, and not trying to do too much too soon, is important in creating a good outcome from your skin cancer reconstruction in Sydney.
Follow up after your skin cancer reconstruction in Sydney
You will be asked to see Dr Gavin Sandercoe for several follow up appointments to ensure that your body is healing well from the procedure. This also allows your Specialist Plastic Surgeon in Sydney to treat any complications that occur. You will have appointments scheduled at one week, one month, three months (optional) and six months after your breast lift in Sydney. Some procedures may require longer follow up. If there are any problems, we want to hear from you and sort it out as soon as possible!
